Counselling for parents and carers

Gateway Family Services provides free parent/carer counselling from our Katoomba office for residents of Penrith and Blue Mountains LGAs.

Professional referrals are not required - parents & carers can self-refer via our online referral form if they have concerns.

Strengthen the parent/child relationship

The focus of counselling is the parent/child relationship. Parents and carers are supported to reflect on their relationship with their child and to explore any challenges.

Our counsellors support parents and caregivers to problem solve concerns around children’s behaviour and emotions, to better understand the needs of their child, to explore their own emotional responses to their caregiving role and to develop helpful strategies for supporting their child.

The aim is to build stronger relationships that recognise the unique qualities, strengths and skills that already exist as well as what can be enhanced.

This might be done through developing awareness of childhood developmental stages while also discovering opportunities to learn from each other.
