About us
Building a stronger community through helping to build stronger families.
Supporting families in our community since 1989...
We started as the Lower Mountains Family Support Service in 1989 and now as Gateway Family Services we support families from St Marys to Mt Victoria.
1989
Birth of the Lower Mountains Family Support Service
As a response to a 1989 survey of community needs, Blaxland Uniting Church established the Lower Mountains Family Support Service (now Gateway Family Services).
1992
Service funded by the Church with help from a NSW Government grant
In 1990 a grant from Wesley Mission, complemented by funding from the Church, paid for a full-time coordinator. After 1992 the Church fully funded the Service and obtained a small grant from the NSW Department of Community Services. Initially housed in office space in the Blaxland Uniting Church building it was relocated to ‘The Cottage’ next door to the Church in 1991. LMFSS, rapidly developed into a credible and respected welfare agency as its activities and scope expanded.
2006
Services expanded to Penrith
From 2006, Gateway expanded its work into the Penrith LGA, providing family support programs, parenting groups and "It takes a Village" projects as well as working collaboratively to support families attending local childcare centres.
While its primary responsibility is to provide family support services and emergency relief to families under stress or in crisis, the service is now able to offer complementary services across the Penrith and Blue Mountains areas that include support for parents of young children experiencing difficulty, outreach parenting groups and community hub programs and has initiated work with the children's services sector to support vulnerable children and families.
2010
Gateway Family Services is born
In 2010, LMFSS officially changed its name to Gateway Family Services as a reflection of the increasing provision of family services in areas beyond the lower mountains. In 2012, further expansion included the Family Enrichment Project based in Katoomba.
2013
Step By Step Bushfire support project
After the 2013 Bushfires, Gateway was funded by the Ministry for Police and Emergency Services to set up the Step By Step Bushfire support project. This project was widely lauded for its innovative approach to disaster recovery and Gateway has now developed 'WalkWith' an innovative Disaster Recovery resource for use across any jurisdiction and appropriate for any disaster event.

Introducing the Children's Advisory Committee
Gateway has established a Children’s Advisory Committee program in order to collect ideas, thoughts and feedback from the children who use our services. This program is an important part of Gateway's Child Participation Strategy.
A committee made up of children needs to be age appropriate and feel safe and approachable. Our committee members do not meet in stuffy boardrooms, fill out forms or sit through boring PowerPoint presentations.
Play is the language of childhood, so we have designed a range of fun and playful activities to help the children share their thoughts with us. Activities included a graffiti wall, a child acting as a roving reporter conducting interviews with other children, craft and painting stations and most importantly a slime making lab.
It was soooo fun we made art and slime and you should go!
We explained that we really want to hear what the children have to say and that we will think about what they say so that we can make Gateway a better place for all the children who come here. The committee members had a chance to meet our CEO Gregory Lazarus and had an opportunity to share their ideas with him.
We want the children to know that we take their feedback very seriously and will implement their suggestions where we can.
What did we discover?
I was like a volcano that exploded all the time, now I don’t explode as much.
- We found out that our staff are really important, that they make the children feel safe, respected and help them have fun.
- The children told us that they really value the opportunity to meet and play with other kids at Gateway so we have committed to run regular school holiday activities for children connected to the therapy service.
- We observed that the activities we run as part of the CAC provide a safe, supported opportunity for children to practice the social skills and social identities that they have been building on in therapy.
- We found out that children recognise the benefit of expressive therapies not just for themselves but also for other children.
- We discovered that slime is one of the most therapeutic substances on earth.
I’d tell kids how I’d been there and it’s fun.
